Projects and Activities

HASSACHIPATTI - Our Village Project started with a small village of 61 houses ’ Hassachipatti ‘ based on the hill slopes of Matheran

HASSACHIPATTI -

Located a couple hours’ drive away from Mumbai, Hassachipatti has a population of 300. One of the reasons we chose this village was its proximity to our school’s activity centre in Matheran.

PROFILE -

The Villagers

  • The village consists of around 300 people – 40 to 50 of them are children below the age of 15 and around 90 people between the age of 15-22. The total number of women is approximately 150.
  • The average size of a family is 6-8 members, including grandparents..

Sources of Income

  • No jobs are available in the village; they must all travel to Matheran – an hour’s walk from the village – to find work.
  • A majority of the village men work as casual labour and earn on an average of Rs. 150/day (approximately Rs.3000 a month)..
  • Most households own 1-3 chickens and one family own a few cows.
  • No agricultural activity takes place in the area as they do not own any land..

Access to Potable Water

The water is piped down from a small natural spring which almost dries up in the month of May.

  • The villagers all speak Marathi and many of them are conversant in Hindi. English is understood by some of the younger generation who attend the school.
