Kitchen waste composting AGAA

Kitchen waste composting AGAA

Waste to Compost Manure: The school looks at creating an environment where children learn to respect nature and strive to maintain a balance by implementing several conservation initiatives. Children are constant engaged in activities that create ‘best from waste’ and ‘recycle’ rather than discard.

Waste to Compost Manure: It all started when the CAS students of the environment group- Prakriti, under took a project to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. On assessing the various avenues Prakriti students identified that the waste generated in the school’s kitchen was up to 7-8 kilograms or more every day. They decided to look for options of converting this waste into manure keeping in mind that the solution should be without the smells and hassles of decomposing waste.

After intense research, they identified the unit called AGAA that offered the option of converting the kitchen waste into compost without much effort and up keep. This 2-unit solution, simply required kitchen waste like peels of fruits and vegetables, raw food and any other raw- unsalted by- products to be disposed into one unit, a dose of activating enzymes or sawdust was required to initiate the process of composting. Over the next 3 to 4 weeks the kitchen waste would be converted into organic and rich compost. The compost manure thus created now is used in the school gardens and the results are evident in the enhanced flora in the school campus.

This Unit was extremely helpful in reducing the waste and was a great example of the process of generating Best from Waste. Students also sold packs of this organic manure during the schools’ fete and generated funds for additional environmental initiatives.

The success of this initiative is evident as recently the school has invested in another set of Agaa Units supporting the environmental initiatives further.
