Visit to Shepherds’ Women’s Home

The visit was conducted as part of the Social Service programme initiated by the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in its constant endeavours towards inculcating in the students a sense of social commitment and sensitizing the children to the care and needy. The visit aimed at making the students understand and take note that the purpose of education is also to take responsibilities of the needy and make the students better citizens.

The group had carried with them cartons of toiletries, pulses, sugar, nightwear and towels. The visit began by the children saying the school prayer. The inmates also joined the children in the prayer. After the prayers the children sang songs, which the aunties enjoyed thoroughly by singing along and clapping. The students made a genuine effort to make the ladies feel good and happy by initiating and involving them in activities like spot the difference, riddles and dances. The ladies at old age home shed all their inhibitions and danced with the students. It was evident they longed for nothing more than love, care and affection.

The children interacted with the inmates in different ways. They entertained them by telling stories, jokes, playing games, dancing, singing songs, teaching them to play simple games and reciting poems. The aunties interactive freely with the children sharing with them. The activities were undertaken both in English and Hindi for the benefit of all inmates. The inmates interacted very enthusiastically with the children. They too sang songs and danced with the children.

Before leaving, a vote of thanks was given by Niharika Singhania and Vansh Bhatia . The same was reciprocated by the inmates. Children also presented cards to the aunties which they had made themselves. The aunties and the staff of the old age home were touched by this gesture of the children and were cheerful and appreciative of our visit. This was evident by them asking us to visit them again and a letter of appreciation given by the in-charge.

The objective of the programme was achieved in the true sense in which it was intended. The children expressed satisfaction in their experience. Some of the expressed a desire to visit the home again. Overall it was an enriching experience.
