Earth day 2020

DAIS Earth Week in celebration of the 50th anniversary of World Earth Day 22nd to 29th April 2020

April 22, 2020, marked the 50th anniversary of World Earth Day.

Every year, on this day, students at DAIS engage in a range of activities aimed at raising environmental consciousness throughout our school. While continuing this tradition during these unprecedented COVID-19 times seemed extremely challenging, a group of environmentally-conscious teachers and students, the 'Green Warriors,' took it upon themselves to ensure that the tradition of celebrating Earth day continues.

Meticulously planned activities for each age group were to be executed during class time on Microsoft Teams, an online platform. These activities were aimed at engaging students in understanding the importance and relevance of the day and date. Activities that included, recycled art, nature songs and stories, nature quizzes,

upcycling competition, caption writing competition for Happy Earth, inter-house photography and creative writing competitions and many more.

Students were made aware of their responsibility towards their environment and were provided with solutions that could lead to environmental protection and conservation. Students were engaged in discussions that lead them to understand how they can individually and collectively make a difference to their own environment by making small life style changes. They understood that it is our continued responsibility to help the planet sustain itself even after we resume normal life.

Students of grade 11 composed a song and a video depicting the rejuvenation of nature during the lockdown times, thus indicating how human intervention disturbs the balance in nature. The efforts were evident with the responses and promises of change that the students discussed during these sessions.

Quotations from Team Green Warriors:

'It makes me immensely happy to think that we were able to impart knowledge about sustainability to our juniors and even happier to see their high levels of interest they had in the topic!'

'The best thing about Earth Week was seeing the enthusiasm among all the students.'

'My favourite part about Earth Week would most definitely be sharing my love and passion for the environment and wildlife with others!'

'Earth week provided a creative and exciting platform to discuss the pressing issues of environmental consciousness and sustainability, making it truly memorable!
