Model United Nations

DSMUN 2014 - 2015

We left for Dehradun on the 14th of August for the Doon School Model United Nations, which was held from 15th August to the 18th. The flight to Dehradun was silent, except the tapping of keyboards as students worked away at their working papers.

The focus of the trip was to inform students about current affairs, and the issues that are discussed in the UN. The first thing that all the students did as soon as they entered the room was study their speeches, to prepare for the day ahead. The next day, charged up with an energising breakfast, all of us set off for the Doon School. Most of us, while excited, were also nervous, considering the fact that it was the first MUN for many of us. We were escorted to our respective committees, and explained our various topics and plan for the day.

After a tiring day, and a speech from the chief guest, all of a sudden, we were given a crisis situation. Different crises were given to different committees, and as this happened at the end of the day, we only spent some of the time working on the crisis, and had one night to prepare. The crises were all successfully solved by the next day.

The range of crises was diverse- from Dwight Eisenhower almost smashing his laptop with rage as he heard the news about the USS Triton being stolen in the south China sea, to Israeli President Netanyahu being kidnapped by the Hamas, each crisis presented delegates with a chance to ‘save the world’.

Then, on the 16th, came the delegate dance. Bollywood songs were pumped up at full volume, and while there were some like me who preferred the cool Dehradun breeze outside, some preferred to jam to Honey Singh’s songs.

The trip provided us all with a learning experience, and while we had a lot of fun, from celebrating a friend’s birthday at midnight to taking pictures of sleeping roommates, to, we also learnt a lot about current affairs, the functioning of the UNO, and how this would later affect our lives and lives of citizens around the world.
