Democracy and Youth Involvement in the G20

On the 6th of March 2024, students from grade 11 IBD had the privilege of attending an online Round Square Postcard hosted by St. Stithians Girls’ College, South Africa. The Postcard "Democracy: G20 Summit and the Role that Youth Play", brought together students from across the world to discuss the importance of youth engagement in global decision-making.

The Postcard focused on G20, a group consisting of 19 countries and the European Union, addressing major global issues such as economic stability, climate change, and global health. The session also shed light on the various criticisms faced by the G20, such as the exclusion of smaller nations, lack of transparency, and over-representation of wealthy countries. Delegates from different countries engaged in meaningful discussions around these challenges and explored how young people could contribute towards bridging these gaps.

A key area of discussion was the Youth 20 (Y20), a platform that allows young people to voice their opinions to G20 leaders. DAIS delegates actively contributed to discussions around whether the Y20 is a powerful tool for youth representation or merely symbolic. They also explored ways in which the youth could hold the G20 nations accountable for their climate commitments and promote inclusiveness in global discussions.

The Postcard was a remarkable learning experience, inspiring the delegates to think deeply about their role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future and they returned with a heightened awareness of global issues and a renewed commitment to making a difference in their own communities.

Delegates: Aanya Shah, Aarav Reddy, Ikshu Shinde, Illisha Avasthi, Riddimma Sampat and Tvisha Soni.
