Intercambio – India to Spain
La Semana Santa da a toda España un sentido de patriotismo, pasión e ilusión, algo que hemos tenido la oportunidad inolvidable de compartir. Desde el 17 hasta el 31 de marzo, vivimos como españoles, alojándonos en los hogares de los que son ahora amigos para siempre. La experiencia de vivir con una familia española o latinoamericana fue no solo una oportunidad de practicar el idioma, sino también de insertarnos a una cultura y vida nueva. Creamos recuerdos preciosos: cocinar juntos, explorar la ciudad, charlar por la noche, asistir a rendimientos de música y baile, y pasear por las calles inmensas de Madrid. Durante el intercambio, también tuvimos la oportunidad increíble de explorar profundamente el arte y la cultura que previamente solo conocíamos a través de los libros de la escuela. Los fascinantes guías nos llevaron a las salas inmortales del Museo del Prado y al Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, donde pudimos apreciar las obras maestras de artistas renombrados como Picasso, Dalí, Velázquez, Rubens y muchísimos otros. Esta experiencia no solo enriqueció nuestro conocimiento, sino que también nos conectó emocionalmente con España. Como resultado, apreciamos mucho más la historia y la evolución del arte español. Por el otro lado, exploramos el vibrante mundo del deporte y la cultura de los aficionados en España. Experimentamos la intensidad de un partido de fútbol en el famoso Santiago Bernabéu, sumergiéndonos en la pasión que los españoles sienten por el fútbol. Además, visitamos el museo de la tauromaquia, que incluyó un tour guiado por una leyenda del toreo (José Ortega Cano) que nos ofreció una vista única sobre esta tradición española que hemos visto tanto en las películas. La gastronomía también jugó un papel crucial en nuestro viaje, desde probar los básicos como churros y paellas hasta delicias locales como la ropa vieja, patatas bravas y gazpacho, cada plato reflejaba la diversidad culinaria de España y América Latina. En resumen, nuestro intercambio a Madrid fue una ventana a la cultura española, que nos ayudó a experimentar el rico entramado de su historia, arte y tradiciones.
Spain to India!
On the 14th of September, DAIS students enthusiastically welcomed the exchange students from SEK Madrid! With the help of Miss Nitika, Profe Julian and all the hosts, the next nine days were a journey of cultural immersion and new experiences. After a warm welcome at the Mumbai airport, the students headed home. Any form of jet lag or fatigue evaporated, and the first weekend was spent introducing the exchange students to everything we love about our culture. They tried new foods, played different sports and wore some traditional clothes!
Throughout the week, the exchange students visited historical landmarks, an Indian village, and other cultural sites. They also got the opportunity to volunteer with a few NGOss like Advitya, Ed Youth and Jai Vakeel Foundation. This was an entirely different experience for them, and they got to see a new side of our city. The exchange students also came to our school, where our students enthusiastically planned a variety of activities. Along with Indian art, music, yoga, sports and dance workshops, the exchange students took part in the Navratri celebrations in school. Furthermore, they organised an assembly about their culture and city.
Outside of school, the hosts had an array of events planned for the students. From Durga Pooja and Dandiya Events to celebrating birthdays together, the bond formed in these nine days was so memorable. This was the first exchange program after the pandemic and we were so fortunate to be able to partake in it. It was truly special and provided us with insight into the profound impact of culture. We not only sharpened our Spanish language skills, but formed friendships and gained a new appreciation for global diversity.
