Visit to the B. J. Home for Children- Class 4 B

A visit to an orphanage is a life-changing experience as it is filled with emotions and sentiments. The students of Class 4 B had an opportunity to visit an orphanage as part of the Social Service component of the school curriculum. On Saturday 11th November 2017, Class 4 B visited the B. J. Home for Children, which is located in Matunga, Mumbai. The group comprised of 28 students, accompanied by seven members of faculty.

The trip was organized to celebrate the occasion of Children’s Day with the less fortunate children.

The Home is a one-storey building with a garden out in the front. The residents were awaiting our arrival, in their multi-purpose hall and we saw a little girl peeking through the window on the first floor, when the gates opened for us.

On our arrival, we were greeted by the Superintendent of the Home, the in-house social worker, the ‘house-mom’ and the ‘house-dad’. Thereafter, we divided ourselves into 2 groups and we went on a tour of the campus. We had a look into their dormitories, their study-cum-play rooms, their computer room, the kitchen, the dining rooms and the medical room.

After our tour, we were welcomed into the hall, where cheery faces greeted us warmly. We had brought with us some supplies for the children to use, which we handed over to them. We were thanked profusely for the gifts. The children from both schools then formed smaller mixed groups and we conducted an Art and Craft activity with them. Our children made ‘Friendship bands’ for them; and they made beautiful paper flowers for our kids. It was a special time for the children, as they mastered each other’s crafts and skills.

This was followed by a sing-n-dance session, with both groups participating and showcasing their talents. After some precious moments together, it was time for the children to engage in the most difficult part of the visit………. saying goodbye to their new friends. This they did with teary eyes and promises to see other soon.

The visit to the orphanage was a fulfilling experience for the children, as they returned with not only memories, but also some valuable lessons.
