DAIS Akanksha Centre 2014-15

The school conducts a medical camp for Akanksha every year.
We are allowed to use the garden area to play.

The school provides us with the school bus whenever we have asked for. This enables us to takes the students for outings in comfort. This facility is a huge blessing, otherwise we would be struggling with public transport and worrying about the safety of our children as at times we do not have enough adults to monitor the students.

This year, the school has allowed us to use their computer lab where our students are being taught an animation program. We have the staff from Oracle coming in and teaching our students every week. This is a 6-8 weeks program. The Akanksha students would have missed this golden opportunity without the support provided by the school. The school computer lab assistants were there on Day 1 to help us get started.  We sincerely thank the school for allowing our students into this sophisticated lab and use the computers.

The school has provided immense support during our Annual Day programs over the years. They have provided us with projector facilities, snacks for all and also helped with costumes and props. And above all, they have always been present to cheer and appreciate the work done by our students. Mrs. Divya Singhal has been a huge support for us throughout, since we started till date.

Currently, we have 14 students in standard X, of which 9 students come to the centre regularly. The other 6 do not come in as their tuition class timings clash with the Akanksha timings. These students are taught English and Math by Akanksha teachers and volunteers and Ms. Malvika from the DAIS school teaches them Marathi and Science. Ms. Malvika has been teaching the standard X students Science and Marathi since the last 3 years.

The standard X students are also provided snacks by the school on a daily basis.

Last year (2013-14), 7 students appeared for standard X examinations. Three students passed of which the highest was 71% scored by Sabita Jaiswal. The other 4 students who failed were weak and lacked interest. We couldn’t help them much as they were from an Urdu medium.

In the year 2012-13, we had nine students who appeared for standard X. 8 students passed and Pooja Yadav scored the highest. She got an 83%. The one child who failed cleared his SSC in October 2013. Currently 6 of them are in college, standard 12. Pooja is in Xaviers and 3 boys are in Podar, Santacruz, 1 is in Anjuman Islam in Bandra West and the other two are in colleges in the central line.

We also have students from the school volunteering with us on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. These students are committed and sincere and are contributing positively to the growth of the Akanksha students.  The school had also organised a session with the Spanish students where the Akanksha students interacted with the Spanish students. This helped our students understand and value other cultures.
