ADVITYA 2015 - VISIT TO DAIS

Advitya- the ability to be unique, yet second to none. This is the message that Advitya, a creative center for the mentally challenged, seeks to propagate. It is here where differently abled adults gain vocational training, which is otherwise denied to them because of their need for individual attention, age or behavioral problems. This training includes such as dancing, singing, yoga, story-telling and artwork. It was only when we saw the self-involvement with which the students performed these activities, that we realized that they truly are second to none.

At Advitya, we organize activities that keep the students occupied, yet enhance their mental abilities by using color and music. For one session, we had planned for the students to decorate pots using traditional designs. Using various paints, glitter and most importantly their creativity, the students crafted some truly attractive pots that were displayed in our stall at the CAS Fete. For another exciting session, we had the students make their own personalized sock puppets and then present these sock puppets to the rest of the group. These sock puppets were not only endearing, but also gave the students a sense of belonging and pride. It is their ability to take pleasure in the smallest of things, that are taken for granted by us, which enhances us with a greater value for all that we have.

What makes us look forward to Advitya is the general ambiance of the center, rooted in the way the students perceive their abilities as being different, not less. Over the past few weeks, we have also developed a relationship with some of the students, who are always equally excited to see us every Friday. Having understood their individual difficulties, we try and shape our activities to try and work on these difficulties. Nonetheless, our priority is to bring smiles to their face and make them feel content.

It is this happiness that is infecting, that motivates us to persevere and work as a team to make most of the few hours we get with the students. The satisfaction I get from a single session at Advitya is incomparable, and the values of gratitude, compassion and perseverance it teaches me is irreplaceable. I am extremely grateful to our school for giving us such an enriching opportunity.
